What do the above have in common? Well, besides being timekeepers, all of them are examples of old, vintage, and antique clocks and watches.

Antique clocks and watches were made using different materials, designs, styles, and sizes long, long ago. The ability to accurately identify and research on this antique clocks and watches are important then because of the diversity, as well as the number, of clock and watchmakers and manufacturers around the world.

If we are going to trace the history of clocks and watches, we would be back to the late 14th century when the first clock was made. In the early years, as well as many centuries over, mechanical clocks and watches were so uncommon and made by few that only rulers and noblemen had such. The common people, especially those in Europe, have to rely on the few public clocks that are existent.

The majority of clocks and watches made from the 15th to the middle of the 17th century are now mostly in museums and a small percentage in different individuals’ private collection. Most people will never set eyes on these timekeepers nor will be able to recognize them.

Many antique clock and watch collectors would agree that periods in history greatly influenced the materials and styles of clocks and watches, such that these timekeepers were not only used for time measurement, but as decoration as well. Also, they were made with such high quality that with proper care and maintenance, they are apt to last several centuries.
There are several things that you may take into consideration if you are a collector or just a one time buyer of an antique clock or watch - besides the fact that it should be interesting, beautiful, befitting your needs or you want it to be a part of your life and home for many years.

Any changes made on them will diminish the value of the antique clock or watch.

• Rarity. Common sense dictates that the rarity of anything brings value. To determine rarity, research is required, which may be costly and time consuming. When done, however, it may result into identification of clocks and watches that have excellent value.

• Provenance. Determining the origin of the timepiece, like rarity, can affect the value of the clock or watch greatly. This also is done through research and documentation.

The values of clocks and watches range from a few to several thousand dollars, though there are those that amount to a million or so. Determining a timepiece’s value, however, can only be done if the four areas mentioned above are well looked into or researched. You must search, therefore, for an authority that is honest and with integrity to help you before making a purchase.

Today, millions of people are buying and selling Rolex watches and other fine timepieces over the internet. It is said that Rolex produces around 650,000 to 800,000 watches annually. Sadly enough, counterfeiters around the world produce 10 times that amount each year, turning what was once a business operated in street vendors into a multi-billion dollar industry

Without knowing what tell-tale signs to look for, the average Rolex consumer may easily fall victim to scammers. And while connoisseurs will certainly discern between a $5,000 Rolex and a $50 replica, the existence of large number of counterfeits inevitably affects demand at some level

The best and most accurate way to tell a Rolex from a replica is by checking its Serial#, Model#, Case back ID, and Movement Signature (the 4 primary verification methods used by professionals) by looking between its bottom lugs (part where the band connects to case), top lugs, and by opening the case back respectively.

Clear Casebacks – If you encounter one of these, don’t bother strapping them on. Often times, a replica will have a clear caseback allowing you to see the inside of the watch. Rolex does not make watches with clear casebacks!

Engraved Casebacks – Again, with the exception of a rare Ladies model (circa 1990’s) and the “Sea-Dweller” model, Rolex does not engrave any logos or slogans on their casebacks. Moreover, they are free of any engravings.

Hologram Stickers – A newly purchased Rolex watch will come with a 3-D hologram-encoded sticker on the caseback. The Rolex “crown” trademark is featured just above the case reference number and can be easily identified when viewed. Often times, a fake hologram sticker won’t even have the 3-D effect when viewed. It is simply a hard, concrete pattern that won’t change in appearance one bit. If this is evident, it is surely a counterfeit Rolex.

Date Magnification – All genuine Rolex watches excluding the “Sea-Dweller” features the cyclops that magnifies the date by 2.5x. As you can see in the picture above, the cyclops on the counterfeit is significantly smaller and a bit misaligned. These are common flaws made by counterfeits and you will see many of them today with a larger font date to fool the average consumer.

Triplock Crown Seal – This pertains to the owners or future owners of the Sea-Dweller, Submariner, and the Daytona. These three models feature the “Triplock crown”. The image above shows that the genuine Rolex utilizes the extra seal by the rubber o-ring on the winding tube whereas the counterfeit comes with no seal at all. It is also worth mentioning this to be a case by case situation when purchasing a pre-owned Rolex, in which many original Rolex parts or accessories can be replaced by aftermarket parts and accessories.

Micro-etched Crystal – In 2002, Rolex began micro-etching the Rolex “coronet” or “crown” right below the 6 o’clock marker. Though it is better distinguishable using a jeweler’s loupe, you can see by the illustration that the genuine “crown” is much more distinguishable and robust as opposed to the counterfeit. Moreover, the counterfeit is poorly designed and is a clear indication of a fake.

You can make money, a lot of money with wholesale watches. You can even create a business around it. As a matter of fact that, if you are thinking of any kind of watch business you’ll need to buy them at wholesale watches, so you will be in the “Wholesale Watch Business”.

Now, let’s talk about how you can Make Money with Wholesale Watches. You can make money around different types of watches at different prices depending on what you like and what you can buy. Maybe you like high end watches and you have a supplier, maybe you prefer to sell high quantities of inexpensive watches that you buy for around $2. It’s all up to you and the type of business you want.

There are even many ways to sell those watches. You can sell them to stores, to other wholesalers or distributors and you can also sell them directly to the end user.

I’ve sold watches in different ways at different parts of my life. The first time I sold watches I was about 20 years old. I got a small lot of watches at a good price and I sold them to a very small watch repair shop in San Diego, California. I only had a handful of watches and I doubled my money. Now, I did not really like walking form one business to the next offering low end watches so the next time I stumbled into some watches I did it differently.

A few years ago I had a distribution business with several salespeople. My salespeople serviced convenience stores with novelties and I had the idea of selling watches to those accounts. I went to a big trade show in Las Vegas and purchased a few cases of watches.

My salespeople went to the stores and offered those watches to the accounts and, success. There where an easy sell even when selling them to gas stations and liquor stores. There where very inexpensive watches but I managed to double or triple my money with every sell by still leaving enough money so the retailer could do the same.

These are just two ways I sold watches, you can use many other ways, let me give you a final example of how I sold watches on eBay.

I noticed that the same watches I was selling to my retail store customers where selling on eBay at “wholesale prices”. Only there were not really wholesale prices, they were expensive. I decided to start selling my watches on eBay at through wholesale prices and in bulk. My customers where retail stores, wholesalers, other people selling on eBay. I also got many customers that used the watches as giveaways or promotions.

Now, how much did I sell? About $20,000 per month. Yes, this may sound like a lot of money but I think watches can sell much more. I sold low priced Chinese Made watches for about $3 each, most of the time I sold a few case of 30 or 40 watches.

There are many ways you can sell watches and many ways to make money with them. There are many ways of selling watches of any price range. You could sell them from home to friends and family, to retail stores, on the internet, by mail order, and many others.

How you decide to start selling watches will depend on your personality, your time and your investment. If you want to start selling Rolexes or Omega watches you’ll need more than a couple of hundred bucks. On the other hand if you are selling low cost watches a couple of hundred bucks is all you need.

When buying a discount watch on the internet their are several things one needs to watch out for. If you are buying a brand name watch like a Casio, Timex, Citizen, Seiko or even a higher end Watch Like an Omega or Movado make sure that the company you are purchasing from is reputable. See if they offer any kind of a return policy as well as any kind of warrantee on the watch. Many discount watches online these days are knock offs or gray market watches which do not carry a warrantee by the manufacturer.

Cheaper brands like Timex and Casio are usually gray market goods which means that they do not carry a manufacturers warrantee at all, therefore it is important to see if the online site owner offers any sort of a warrantee at all. If the watch does come directly from the manufacturer then you don’t have to worry and if any trouble arises you can then just send the watch in for repair or replacement. Their is a lot of gray market goods on the internet especially Ebay. The watches are the same quality as what you would get from the maker directly. What is done is that buyers will bypass the watch company directly and approach the actual factories. By buying from the factory direct they can get a much better price. The quality is the same. The only draw back is that you do not have a warrantee therefore if the watch is defective you are not covered by a manufacturers warrantee. Usually the way you can tell if the watch his gray market is by the price. If you go and look on the internet use something like froogle and see what the current price seems to be. Anyone undercutting that price by a great deal is usually selling gray market or knock off watches. If you think about it this way everyone is selling to make money so if someone is selling at a price that is so greatly reduced that they cant possibly make anything you should be asking yourself why.

Finding a higher end watch at a discount online can be quite tricky, it is actually easier to find a knock off. Most of your high end watch companies like Rolex, Movado, Omega, Rado and Tag do not allow selling of their product on the internet, therefore many of the online sites that sell these higher end watches will sell the watch to you, but before they do they will take the serial numbers off to hide where the watch came from. Since most of the higher end models have unique identifying serial numbers on them. They can be used to track the watch back to a particular watch seller. Since a lot of the hihger end makers don’t want the product sold on the web they will go and make purchases online to see if they can track the watch back from the account that it came from which will get the account closed. For this reason the serial numbers are removed. In doing this the manufacturer will not honor the warrantee. If you decide to buy one of these watches online make sure the site you buy from offers a warrantee. Most will offer a 3 year warrantee which replaces the one of the manufacturer.

So if you do want to buy a watch online at a cheaper price please make sure you look at these factors so you are not disappointed by your purchase. Lately knock offs have become very popular and they are a viable alternative to buying a high end watch. You can get a good knock off for 2 to 300 dollars. Most of them even come with a 2 year warrantee. I have seen a few of these and they are difficult to identify as a fake unless you are a horologist you will not be able to tell the difference until you actually crack the case open.

The popularity of the internet has made buying and selling of various items as easy as clicking the computer mouse. Most transactions are completed in just a matter of minutes or seconds, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

People used to go from one store to another to choose watches for themselves or for their loved ones. Today, choosing a watch can be easily achieved just by looking at the different catalogues offered by various websites selling different kinds of watch.

Buying a watch online can be easy but it can be quite tricky considering that you are only choosing from photographs without ever touching the watch or knowing how it looks on your hands. People who do not have the time to go from one store to another however believe that getting their watch online can save them time and money.

When choosing a watch online, do not just be tempted to choose one that looks good on the net. Make sure that you know the details of the watch like the price, the warranty and the quality of the watch. It is also important to take note of the shipping services offered by the company selling the watch online.

It is hard to choose from among the hundreds of watch photos displayed on different websites. However, you should limit your choice to the watch that meets your budget. It is not wise to go overboard when choosing a watch online. Thus, you must always have a ceiling price for your budget.

Why waste your time looking at the website for watches that costs an arm and a leg? Be realistic and go directly to watch catalogues that have more affordable prices.

You can start by looking at the photos of different kinds of watch in the interne t and check them out when you are visiting the malls. This way, you are able to see the quality of the watch physically. Make sure you get the right model when doing your research so you can compare it to the real thing when going shopping.

When you have decided on the type of watch you like and you have examined a similar model in the shops, then you can buy the watch online. However, you have to make sure that you are getting the exact model and that the online dealer offers a warranty for the watch.

Choosing a reputable online watch dealer is a must if you do not want to be shortchanged. Shopping for a watch online can make the job easier but you also have to be vigilant about the reputation of the dealer and the type of watch you are buying.

If you have ever worked for your company’s marketing department, you will know the importance of keeping your clients’ goodwill. Keeping clients happy is a time-honored strategy, and no one is better at this than corporate America. In fact, giving promotional items, or things with your company’s name on it, is considered part of a marketing plan.

So, what is the best present to give to clients?

Try pocket watches. A good present is one that has combines utility with physical beauty in equal measures. No executive gift is as elegant and tasteful as pocket watches. Not only is it useful, it is historically significant, too.

In 1542, a man named Peter Heinlein made a portable watch, which he kept in his pocket. This carry-around watch greatly helped in the creation of navigational maps. Throughout the years, pocket watches became staple accessory for the nobility. It was not used by people from all social classes until the early 1900s.

The beauty of pocket watches is that they are small and highly portable. Additionally, they may be used as a practical addition to one’s wardrobe. They come in many elegant styles and no matter what your clients’ industry may be, you will never run out of pocket watches that will prove useful to them. After all, who does not need a watch? Who does not need to know time?

Most companies set a limit on the amount that should be spent on executive gifts for clients. This will not be a problem should you decide to purchase pocket watches. Pocket watches have prices ranging from the ridiculously low to the inordinately high. Additionally, your clients’ diverse fashion styles will not pose problems, too, because pocket watches may be worn in a number of ways. They may be worn as necklaces or cufflinks. Or, you could simply put them in your pocket.

A good way to personalize the pocket watches you give to clients is through engraving. Aside from having your company name and a brief message written on pocket watches, you could also add the clients’ names. Engraving will make clients feel special because it sends out the message that the company knows them by name and took the time to have these names etched onto pocket watches.

Another way to personalize pocket watches is through design. This is done so that clients can make the association between the timepieces and the products or services your company provides. For example, if your company manufactures shoes, the pocket watches may come in the shape of a boot or a sole. Or, it may have a shoe logo on its face.

The marketing possibilities where pocket watches are concerned are endless. In your choice of pocket watches, however, be sure you pick those that capture both the attention and the imagination. Giving executive gifts is an excellent way to maintain a positive relationship between the company and its clients. More often than not, the gift you choose will come to symbolize, for the client, everything that the company stands for. In picking out the pocket watches to give to clients, be sure you choose the timepieces that can do the talking for you.

As a big fan of watches in general and luxury watches in particular, I have decided to write this short guide to help you buy new watches.

I am a fan of discount Seiko watches – I have a Seiko sporture watch, a Seiko body movement watch and a Seiko kinetic relay watch. All purchased in the last six months or so. I know most of you are less compulsive about watches so I have written this five steps guide to normal people:

1. Why do you want a new watch? What are the uses of the watch?

Your answer will determine which kind of watch you should look for. For example, If you are diving, I would suggest you get a Seiko diving watch. If you are a businesswoman, I would suggest you get a ladies Seiko watch and so on. Yet, you must know that watches can do much more than telling the time nowadays. Modern watches may even have a GPS or a MP3 player embedded inside them. Some watches are actually mini computers.

2. How much money are you willing to spend on your new watch?

I would not suggest you to spend thousands of dollars buying a luxury watch (Rolex watches, TAG Heuer etc.). I do not think that luxury watches are a symbol of a person’s success. I think one of the discount Seiko watches should fit everyone’s budget.

3. Are you looking for an automatic watch or a quartz watch?

The difference, by the way, is that an automatic watch does not have batteries – it is getting charged by the physical movement of the wrist. I personally prefer automatic watches like the Seiko body movement watch and the Seiko kinetic relay watch.

4. Which firm should the watch belong to – Seiko, Swatch, Rolex, Omega or maybe a Replica watch?

You may have noticed that I am a big fan of Seiko. Seiko watches are the most reliable and have the quality of expensive luxury watches.

5. Where should you buy your new watch?

You might remember seeing older people wind their watches every night before going to bed, or in the morning before they start the day. That’s because manual wind watches will run down and stop. However, most modern watches don’t need to be wound. Self-winding, or automatic watches function on the same mechanism, but a different power source prevents you from having to wind up your watch on a daily basis. That’s a big benefit if you’re busy and don’t often remember to take the time to wind your watch. There’s little more frustrating than checking the time, and discovering that your wristwatch has stopped.

It’s Based on Motion Throughout the Day

Self-winding watches keep themselves going without any sort of daily winding because the motion of your wrist and arms throughout the day provides enough force to rewind the watch. That’s why this type of watch can still run down if you don’t wear it often. For people who don’t wear their self-winding watch on a daily basis, manual winding every two weeks or so is required. Alternatively, you could use an automatic watch winder. These small devices mimic your motions, and keep your watch wound, even though you’re not using the watch regularly.

Don’t mistake a self-winding watch for quartz watches. Those more modern devices are powered not by human motion, but by batteries. While watch batteries last around two years, they can stop without warning, and replacing them can be a pain. Automatic watches, on the other hand, have their own never ending source of power. These devices were first developed as wristwatches in the 1930s, and sold by Rolex. While the idea of a self winding watch is even older – the first pocket model was made in 1770 – they weren’t viable until the 20th century. Since their introduction, self winding watches have enjoyed a steady popularity.

If you’re looking for a self winding watch, some of the Japanese watch makers, such as Seiko, offer them. They come in a plethora of designs and styles. So, you won’t lack for choice, whether you want to wear the watch as jewelry, or simply have a dependable timepiece that will keep running without giving it a thought.

Can Last a Lifetime

It’s a good idea to have a watch shop look at your self winding watch about once every three years. They’ll check the seals, make sure everything’s properly lubricated, and keep your watch going the way it should. We’re used to thinking of wristwatches as disposable objects. However, a good self-winding watch can last you a life time if you take care of it. You’ll never need batteries, and routine wear will keep the watch working well. That makes a self winding watch one that you don’t have to think about. Without much maintenance, it’ll continue to let you know what time it is. If you’re thinking about getting a new watch, or are frustrated with your old one, consider a self-winding model. You may never have to buy a watch again.

Omega watches have been around for over 120 years with the company first producing watches in 1885, yes, that is a long, long ago! You figure that any company that has been around that long must make a really great product or they would have gone out of business a long time ago. They are located in Biel/Bienne Switzerland and it is one of the more prestigious brand names in watches today.

The company has been able to change with the times and works hard to meet the needs of its customers. They have a rigorous set of steps and procedures that each newly designed product must go through to ensure that it meets the company’s strict set of quality controls.

The company boasts that it was an Omega watch that was the first on the moon with the US Astronaut Buzz Aldrin. It has been associated with the famous James Bond movie franchise since 1995. That year, Pierce Brosnan took over the role of James Bond, and the producers wanted to update the image of the fictional “super-spy” to a more distinctly sophisticated “Euro” look.

Now, with this background information you definitely want to get an Omega watch for yourself. What better timepiece than the one worn by James Bond! Every man wants to lead an exciting life just like him.

If, you are fortunately enough that someone left you and older model of an Omega pocket watch, you should consider yourself very lucky. If it has been sitting around in someone’s drawer collecting dust, do not attempt to start it without having it first checked by a professional watch repair person. Your heirloom watch should be checked out because friction will gradually wear down the components of its mechanisms.

It should be oiled every three years and professional cleaned every 10 years. You can pretty much assume that it has been sitting around for a long time in a drawer and that you should first take it to a professional. If replacement parts are needed, remember to only have those items replaced that are absolutely necessary. You want to ensure that you keep the monetary value of it intact and a conservative approach is best when it comes to replacement parts.

Oh well, you were not left an old Omega watch by anyone in your family, so you are going to go out and purchase one for yourself. There are so many different watch styles to choose from that you will probably be overwhelmed during your search. You can begin by narrowing your search down a bit-do you want a pocket watch or a wristwatch? What special features do you want it to have? Is it important to you that it be self-winding, battery operated, water proof, tell you the date, have a stop watch? By figuring out exactly what you want, you can begin looking at the different models.

Figure out which Omega watch you want and then go out and buy it. You will know that you have purchased a watch that it is truly a fine piece of jewelry. And while no one left you an antique heirloom, may your watch handed down for a few generations will eventually be an antique that is treasurer by someone.

When people from my grandfather’s generation retired after being with a company for decades they got gold watches. Gold watches no longer exist as far as companies are concerned. Now companies give out pink slips (a.k.a. their walking papers) after 25 years of service. We are living in a different world but it is humorous to me in a way.

Companies no longer have loyalty to those employees that have been loyal to them for years and years of service. When it is clear that companies no longer care about their employees in most cases, it is funny to me when the management of a company gets upset when the employees are no longer loyal to them either. They still expect the employees to be loyal without giving it in return. The same applies for customers. They get upset when a customer of 25 years leaves for a company just because of a cheaper price.

I have said in a previous article that I work for Liberty Mutual Insurance. Since I have gotten in the department I am in now, which is Personal Sales, I have seen some very good employees either forced out the door or forced into taking demotions. The new management comes in and decides they want their own people in place. They either eliminate positions to get some people out the door or they just “performance manage” them out the door.

I am not singling out Liberty Mutual by any means. In fact, I suspect other companies are even worse because Liberty has historically been a very conservative company. Other more aggressive companies are probably laying even more people off, or pushing more people out the doors so they can replace them with “their” people who are younger and cheaper.

I am also not saying that some of the older people do not deserve to move on. Some people I have managed over the last year and a half in this department just do not want to be here and they make it obvious. They continue to do things the way they have always done it. They make little effort to learn new technologies and procedures to keep up with the changing business world and customer’s demands. These people are not the ones I am referring to in this article. I am referring to the people who are on top of their game, still making a significant contribution to the company and they are just forced out because management does not like them.

I think Liberty Mutual is one of the last companies that still has a large population of employees who have worked their whole career for the company. I also think this is not going to be the case five or ten years down the road. It is a shame that business has become so ruthless and does not care about the employees any longer.
